Diwali Crackers and Your Ears, Nose and Throat: A Safety Guide

Diwali is about light, sweets and family, but the days around it bring a sharp rise in ear, nose and throat complaints. Firecrackers produce sudden loud sound and a thick cloud of smoke, and both can affect your body more than most people expect.

How crackers affect your ears

A single loud blast can be enough to damage the delicate hair cells inside the inner ear. Sounds above about 85 decibels can harm hearing with repeated exposure, and many crackers are far louder than that at close range. After a loud blast you may notice ringing in the ears (tinnitus), a blocked feeling, or muffled hearing. If this does not settle within a day or two, get your ears checked.

How cracker smoke affects nose and throat

Cracker smoke carries fine particles and chemicals that irritate the lining of the nose and throat. This can cause sneezing, a running or blocked nose, dry cough, sore throat and a scratchy voice. People with allergies, sinus trouble or asthma are affected more.

Simple safety steps

1 Watch crackers from a distance of at least 10 metres, and do not stand near a burst.

2 Use earplugs or ear muffs, especially for children.

3 Keep infants away from loud sounds. Their ears are very sensitive.

4 Stay in a well ventilated area and avoid the thickest smoke.

5 Wash your face, rinse your mouth and drink warm water after being outdoors.

6 Keep windows closed during peak cracker hours if you have allergies.

7 Never put oil, drops or objects into the ear after a blast.

When to see an ENT specialist

Meet an ENT doctor if you have ringing that lasts more than 24 to 48 hours, sudden hearing drop, ear pain or discharge, bleeding from the ear, a cough or sore throat lasting more than a week, or breathing difficulty. Do not wait if a child seems to have hearing trouble after a loud blast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can firecrackers cause permanent hearing loss?

Yes, very loud or close blasts can cause lasting damage. Early checking improves the outcome.

Is ringing in the ear after a cracker serious?

It can be a sign of inner ear injury. See a specialist if it continues beyond two days.

Are cotton plugs enough protection?

Cotton gives very little protection. Proper earplugs or ear muffs work better.
