Sinusitis or
Just a Cold? How to Tell the Difference This Monsoon
Confused between sinusitis and common cold this monsoon? Dr. Sanjeev Mohanty breaks down the key differences, symptoms, and when to see an ENT specialist.
Every monsoon in Chennai, one
question comes up in clinic more than any other: "Doctor, is this just a
cold, or is it sinusitis?" It's a fair question, the two conditions share
several symptoms, and telling them apart isn't always obvious. But knowing the
difference matters, because the treatment approach is different.
What Happens With a Common
Cold
A common cold is caused by a
viral infection affecting your upper respiratory tract. It typically brings a
runny or blocked nose, sneezing, mild sore throat, and sometimes a low fever.
The hallmark of a cold is that it's short lived, symptoms peak within two to
three days and clear up within a week without needing antibiotics.
What Happens With
Sinusitis
Sinusitis occurs when the sinus
cavities around your nose and eyes become inflamed, often after a cold that
didn't fully resolve. Monsoon humidity and blocked nasal passages create ideal
conditions for this. Unlike a cold, sinusitis symptoms tend to persist beyond
10 days, or actually worsen after initially improving.
Key Differences to Watch
For
●
Duration: cold improves within a week; sinusitis
lingers beyond 10 days or worsens after improving
●
Pain location: sinusitis causes facial pain and
pressure around cheeks, forehead, or between the eyes
●
Discharge: thick yellow green nasal discharge is more
typical of sinusitis
●
Smell and taste: reduced sense of smell is more common
with sinusitis
●
Headache: sinusitis headaches often worsen when bending
forward
Why This Distinction
Matters
Colds resolve on their own with
rest, fluids, and symptomatic relief. Sinusitis, especially if bacterial,
sometimes needs targeted treatment, and chronic or recurring sinusitis can
require a proper ENT evaluation, occasionally including endoscopy or imaging to
rule out structural issues.
When to See an ENT
Specialist
If your "cold"
symptoms cross the 10 day mark, come with facial pain or pressure, or keep
recurring every monsoon, it's worth getting evaluated rather than repeatedly
self treating with over the counter decongestants.
